Why does the NFL use Roman numerals for the Super Bowl?

In June of 1966, the NFL and AFL agreed to merge for the 1970 season, but until then, both leagues would meet in a championship game after their respective seasons had ended. Since their seasons took place in the fall and this new game would be played in the new year, organizers decided to assign each edition a number instead of a year to avoid confusion.

After a six-year hiatus, the Super Bowl will return to the Golden State in February of 2022. Super Bowl LVI will be held inside California's SoFi Stadium, which opened in September of 2020. The home of the Rams and Chargers, SoFi Stadium is located in Inglewood, about a 20-minute drive from Los Angeles. Super Bowl LVI is slated to be kicked off on Sunday, February 6.

Next year will mark the 13th Super Bowl played in California. Santa Clara, San Diego, Pasadena, Palo Alto, and Los Angles are the California cities that have previously hosted a Super Bowl. California's 12 Super Bowls is second to Florida, which just hosted its 17th Super Bowl on Sunday between the Chiefs and Buccaneers. Miami's 11 Super Bowls remains the all-time record, followed by New Orleans (10), Los Angeles (five) and Pasadena (five).

The Rams and Chargers could join the 2020 Buccaneers as the only teams to play a Super Bowl inside their home stadium. By virtue of winning the NFC title, the Buccaneers became the first team to play a Super Bowl inside their home stadium during Super Bowl LV. The Buccaneers were also the home team by virtue of being the NFC team. The AFC will be the home team for Super Bowl LVI.

Kansas City ( 550) is the early favorite to win the 2022 Super Bowl, according to William Hill Sportsbook. The Packers ( 900), Buccaneers ( 1100), Ravens ( 1200), Bills ( 1200) and Rams ( 1300) are the other front-runners to reach next year's Super Bowl. The Lions ( 10000), Jets and Texans are tied with the worst odds to win Super Bowl LVI.

Super Bowl LV is ready to kick off on Sunday. The game will kick off at 6:30PM Eastern Standard Time (EST). NFL fans all around the world will be tuning in to watch one of the best quarterback matchups in Super Bowl history.

Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady will be leading their respective teams into the biggest game of the 2020-2021 NFL season. Brady has been to the big game a record ten times throughout his career. Mahomes is making his second appearance in the big game in back-to-back seasons.

Kansas City Chiefs are defending Super Bowl Champions but are facing an unfamiliar situation. Tampa Bay is also entering the Super Bowl in an unfamiliar situation. For the first time in NFL Super Bowl history the city that is hosting the game will also be playing in the game.

Not to mention the NFC is the home team in Super Bowl LV. This makes the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a true home team and the Kansas City Chiefs a true road team. With fans being limited for the Super Bowl, it should be interesting to see how many Buccaneers and how many Chiefs fans show up.

The Buccaneers have not played in the Super Bowl since 2002 but they have the key to a victory. Tom Brady has been extremely successful in the Super Bowl with winning six championships already. Brady also owns every Super Bowl record other than win percentage.

If the Buccaneers can defeat the Kansas City Chiefs, Tom Brady will add another ring to his hand making it his seventh. Brady has made it known that he wants to play past the age of 45. If he continues playing at the level he is at right now, Brady will be running out of fingers to house his rings soon.

Patrick Mahomes has been named as the best young quarterback in the NFL. Mahomes is only 25 years old and if he wins on Sunday it will give him his second championship, putting him on a good path to catching Tom Brady.

With all the significant value to Sunday's game, it brings on one question for viewers. What time does the 2021 NFL Super Bowl come on if a fan lives in the central time zone?

What channel is the Super Bowl on? Chiefs vs. Buccaneers ...

41 rows  · The TV channel for Chiefs vs. Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55 will be easily accessible, and there ...

You won't have to look hard to find Chiefs vs. Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55 on your television. And it's even got a nice, relatively early start time so that the kids can stay up for the whole thing before going to school the next day.

LIVE: Follow the score, updates & highlights from Super Bowl 55

Just tune your TV set to CBS by 6:30 p.m. ET to see Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes face off in maybe the greatest Super Bowl quarterback matchup in NFL history. There are certainly riveting dueling narratives for the game. On one side, Brady's Buccaneers are playing at home in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium in Brady's first year away from the Patriots. On the other side is last year's Super Bowl MVP Mahomes and the reigning champion Chiefs.

Mahomes and the Chiefs only lost one game all season, way back on Oct. 11 to the Raiders. Since then, they've made relatively light work of the entire NFL as Mahomes has continued to thrive in his third year as a starter in the Andy Reid and Eric Bieniemy offense. Combined with dominant weapons like wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce, Kansas City is tough to stop.

But if anyone can find a way to win yet again on the biggest stage, it's Brady. He's won six Super Bowls in his career, but those were all in New England. He departed Bill Belichick and company in the offseason, choosing to join Bruce Arians' Buccaneers in pursuit of another title even at 43 years old. There was already offensive firepower in place in the form of Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Ronald Jones, and veterans followed Brady in the hopes of this exact stage, including Antonio Brown, Rob Gronkowski and Leonard Fournette.

Tampa Bay will be the first team to play a Super Bowl in its home stadium, and it will be only the second Super Bowl in franchise history. They won their only other appearance, back in Super Bowl 37 in 2003.

The Chiefs played in the first and fourth Super Bowls, winning in 1970 in their second appearance, but then went 50 years without playing in the season's final game. That changed a year ago when Mahomes led Kansas City past the 49ers with a late-game comeback to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.

What channel is the Super Bowl on in 2021?

The NFL's latest Super Bowl broadcast rights deal was struck in 2014 with CBS, Fox and NBC continuing a rotation begun in 2006. This was actually meant to be NBC's year in the rotation after Fox broadcast Super Bowl 54, but NBC and CBS swapped to allow NBC to do 2022 Winter Olympics promotion along with its Super Bowl broadcast next year.

This will be CBS' last turn of the current rights deal, which expires after the 2022 Super Bowl and is sure to set off a major bidding war for the next rights to broadcast the Super Bowl. CBS has broadcast the Super Bowl more than any other network, with this being the 21st time CBS will show the big game.

The crew that broadcast the AFC Championship will be back on your screens for the Super Bowl as CBS brings out all the big guns. Jim Nantz will do play-by-play, marking his sixth Super Bowl with those duties. Former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is his color commentator for the second time in a Super Bowl.

They'll be joined by three sideline reporters. Tracy Wolfson will be a part of her fourth Super Bowl with CBS. Evan Washburn and Jay Feely will both take part in their third Super Bowl broadcast on the sidelines. Feely, a former NFL kicker, lends kicking expertise to the mix.

Former official Gene Steratore is the CBS rules expert that will join the call whenever there's an officiating or rules question.

Super Bowl start time 2021

  • Buccaneers vs. Chiefs kickoff time: 6:30 p.m. ET

The 6:30 p.m. ET kickoff time has become the norm for the Super Bowl. It means the game could end by about 10 p.m. ET, which should allow the kids to stay up until the end even with school the next day. It's an unused kickoff time during the NFL's regular season but is certainly welcome for the season's final game.

The Kansas City Chiefs just keep finding ways to come out on top in NFL playoff games. Next on the schedule is an AFC Championship matchup against the No. 4 seeded Cincinnati Bengals with a trip to Super Bowl LVI on the line.

Of course, fans are already looking ahead and wondering who Kansas City will face past the AFC Championship.

Here's everything you need to know about the Chiefs' schedule for Super Bowl LVI.

Kansas City advanced to the AFC Championship after a 42-36 overtime victory over the No. 3 Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round.

There's only two teams remaining in the AFC, and the Chiefs will take on the No. 4 seed Cincinnati Bengals in the Championship Round. If Kansas City is able to take care of business, they will play the winner of the San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 56.

If the Chiefs are able to defeat the Bengals in the Conference Championship, this sets up a Super Bowl LVI clash between them and the winner of the 49ers-Rams matchup. The Super Bowl will be held on Sunday, Feb. 13.

The Chiefs must first get past the No. 4 Bengals in the AFC Championship. If they do advance, the NFL has Super Bowl LVI scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST on Sunday, February 13, 2022.

The Super Bowl will air on NBC at 6:30 p.m. EST on Sunday, February 13, 2022.

The Chiefs have played in four previous Super Bowls. Kansas City has posted a 2-2 record across those four games. The Chiefs first appeared in the Super Bowl in 1967 (for the 1966 NFL season) and lost to the Green Bay Packers, 35-10. Kansas City next appeared in the Super Bowl in 1970 (for the 1969 NFL season) and defeated the Minnesota Vikings, 23-7.

The Chiefs next appearance in the Super Bowl was in 2020 (for the 2019 NFL season), where they defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20. Kansas City's last Super Bowl appearance came in 2021 (for the 2020 NFL season), where they lost the the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 31-9.

The Chiefs beat the Bills and will play in the AFC Championship against the No. 4 seed Cincinnati Bengals. If they advance, the Chiefs will square off against the winner of the 49ers-Rams in the Super Bowl

What time is Super Bowl 2021? Chiefs vs. Buccaneers ...

Kickoff time for Super Bowl 55 between the Chiefs and Buccaneers is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS on Sunday. Here is all the TV and live stream info you need for the Super Bowl.

The 2021 Super Bowl will kick off at what's become a standard start time for the NFL's final game of the season. Get your televisions or live streams to CBS at 6:30 p.m. ET to make sure you don't miss a moment of Chiefs vs. Buccaneers from Tampa's Raymond James Stadium.

LIVE: Follow the score, updates & highlights from Super Bowl 55

You could be tuning in to the greatest quarterback matchup in Super Bowl history. On one side is six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, but he's not wearing his familiar Patriots colors. He migrated south for the 2020 season, abandoning Bill Belichick in New England and joining Tampa Bay. He and the Buccaneers were only good enough for a wild-card spot in the regular season, but they've won three playoff games on the road to get a home Super Bowl.

Opposing Brady is Patrick Mahomes, only the reigning Super Bowl MVP who hoisted the Lombardi Trophy about a year ago. Any discussion of what modern QB could rival Brady as the greatest of all time starts with Mahomes, who may have the most arm talent in NFL history. The third-year starter won MVP in 2018 and Super Bowl MVP last year. He's pretty good himself.

The star-studded nature of this game doesn't end with the quarterbacks, of course. Mahomes' top weapons are Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, while Brady's offense is loaded with Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown, Rob Gronkowski, Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones. Whichever defense can slow down a legendary quarterback could have the advantage.

So don't miss a moment of the action. We have all the information below about when you need to lock your TV on what should be a highly entertaining matchup.

What channel is the Super Bowl on today?

  • TV channel (national): CBS
  • TV channel (Tampa Bay): WTSP
  • TV channel (Kansas City): KCTV

The 2021 Super Bowl will be broadcast on CBS, which has actually flipped its turn in the three-network rotation with NBC. NBC wanted to trade to broadcast the 2022 Super Bowl to pair its advertising with its 2022 Winter Olympics coverage.

This will be the 21st Super Bowl on CBS, the most of any channel. It will also be the last during the current broadcast agreement that expires after 2022 and featured the three-network rotation of CBS, NBC and Fox, which broadcasted last year's game.

On the CBS call will be the network's No. 1 NFL broadcast team. That means Jim Nantz on the call for his sixth Super Bowl and joined in the booth by Tony Romo, who will be calling his second.

There's a heavy crew of additional reporters joining Nantz and Romo, with Tracy Wolfson, Evan Washburn and Jay Feely all serving as sideline reporters for the broadcast. CBS will also have Gene Steratore, a long-time league official, to provide rules analysis during the game.

Super Bowl 2021 odds, picks, predictions

The Buccaneers opened as 3 1/2-point underdogs against the Chiefs in Super Bowl 55. That's despite the game being played in Tampa Bay's home, Raymond James Stadium.

Super Bowl odds (via DraftKings Sportsbook):

  • Point spread: Chiefs -3.5
  • Over/under total: 57.5

Super Bowl picks, predictions:

Vinnie Iyer: Last year in this space, I somehow went with a pick against Patrick Mahomes. Let's correct that now, because the Chiefs are playing as complete Super Bowl reigning champions.

Tom Brady has done great work leading the Buccaneers and raising their offensive efficiency. The "home team" also has a pretty good overall defense. But the Chiefs counter well and have QB play, pass defense, coaching and experience all on their side on top of that unstoppable, intimidating feeling. Although Brady will have his typical Super Bowl moments, Mahomes will have a lot more of his to ensure the Chiefs repeat, keeping himself on a special trajectory to rack up rings.

Prediction: Chiefs 31, Buccaneers 27

Bill Bender: Patrick Mahomes passed for 462 yards in the regular-season meeting, and at one point it looked like Tyreek Hill would set the single-game receiving record. Tackle Eric Fisher’s injury is a major storyline given how Shaquil Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul were able to combine for five sacks in the NFC championship game, but Mahomes presents more of a challenge because of his mobility.

Look for a similar game to emerge the second-time around. Kansas City will build a first-half lead behind TD passes to Hill and Travis Kelce, but Tom Brady — as he so often does — will lead a comeback in the second half. Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Rob Gronkowski will make their share of plays in the passing games, and Leonard Fournette will be more involved this time around.

In the end, however, the Chiefs don’t give Brady a chance to lead the game-winning drive. Mahomes wins Super Bowl MVP honors again, and Andy Reid starts thinking about a three-peat.

Prediction: Chiefs 35, Buccaneers 32

Mike DeCourcy: There is no such thing as an undeserving Super Bowl entrant. Getting into the NFL Playoffs, when margins in the league are so narrow between success and failure, is an underrated accomplishment. Maneuvering through those playoffs to the ultimate stage is amazing.

Sometimes, that achievement needs to be embraced — because that’s as good as it’s going to get.

The Buccaneers were a 7-9 team a year ago. They were 5-11 the year before that. Now, they are a Super Bowl team. Soon they will be a Super Bowl loser, but until kickoff they can revel in the overnight quality of their success. They brought in an “aging” Tom Brady, watched him wrestle with the conversion to a new system, heard those who doubted it ever would take and now can laugh at those who wondered if he could be successful with a different team, at an age when most NFL players are long since retired.

The Super Bowl will not be about Brady, though. It will be about how Tampa can stop Patrick Mahomes. They did an excellent job against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. But this is even a half-step beyond that. And they won’t succeed. Mahomes is too elusive, too inventive. It will not be easy for KC, but it will be done.

Prediction: Chiefs 33, Buccaneers 24

Matt Lutovsky: The Buccaneers don’t have many weaknesses, but if there’s one area they struggle, it’s pass defense. That’s not ideal against Patrick Mahomes and company, so unless the loss of Eric Fisher (Achilles’) opens the door for Tampa’s solid pass rush to wreak havoc, Kansas City should have a key advantage.

Tampa will be able to run with its dynamic duo in the backfield — and it figures to shut down KC on the ground — but Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Tyreek Hill are playing so well it might not matter. Throw in an opportunistic Kansas City defense against a somewhat mistake-prone Bucs offense, and you have just enough reason to like the Chiefs here.

Prediction: Chiefs 30, Buccaneers 24

Joe Rivera: The more things change, the more they stay the same.   While the Chiefs aren’t playing the 49ers in the Super Bowl this year, the matchup looks very similar in a lot of ways, and a lot like last year, the Chiefs’ defense is the key ingredient that isn’t been talked about enough throughout another KC romp through the playoffs.   While Patrick Mahomes (deservedly) gets most of the praise for being a human “Madden” glitch, the Chiefs’ defense held one of the NFL’s most potent offenses to just 15 points through three quarters in the AFC championship game, with a few inconsequential scores bumping up the Bills’ total to 24 points.   The Chiefs are, once again, playing a top-level defense with a pretty killer pass rush. Without left tackle Eric Fisher (out with an Achilles tear), Kansas City will have its hands full with both Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaq Barrett, though Mahomes’ mobility and Andy Reid’s creative play-calling will likely mitigate the threat of the pass rush, much like they did in Super Bowl 54.   In order to beat a Brady-led team, you have to play a near perfect game. Tampa Bay’s wide receiver corps is going to be a lot to deal with. The run game will be, too.

But the “Patrick Price” is going to be too much for Brady and the Bucs to pay, and Mahomes will get his playoff revenge for the 2018 AFC championship game loss to then-Patriot Brady.

Patrick Mahomes is arguably the best player in the NFL. He and the Chiefs are looking to win their second successive Super Bowl ring.

The Bucs, on the other hand, have the most successful player in NFL history in Tom Brady. The six-time Super Bowl champion is looking to win his seventh ring. If he is successful, it will be his first ring since leaving Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots’ dynasty.

The Chiefs finished the regular season with a 14-2 record, earning a first-round playoff bye. They then defeated the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills, respectively, to earn a spot in Super Bowl 55. The Bucs finished the regular season with an 11-5 record. They defeated the Washington Football Team on Wild Card Weekend. After that, they took down the New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round and NFC Championship Game, respectively.

As of right now, the halftime show is set to start at 6:23 PM ET (3:23 PM PT).

Related: Super Bowl National Anthem: Who’s singing in Super Bowl 55?

Sullivan and Church’s performance will be preceded by Grammy-winner H.E.R. singing “America the Beautiful.” The song has the distinction of being performed pre-game for Super Bowl XI, the only Super Bowl that didn’t feature a rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” After decades of not being featured, it has been performed prior to the national anthem at every Super Bowl since 2009.

Amanda Gorman, the country’s first National Youth Poet Laureate, will also be performing before the game. Gorman has been one of the stars of 2021 after reading at the inauguration of President Biden. She will read an original poem prior to kickoff at 6:28 PM ET (3:28 PM PT).

What time is the Super Bowl halftime show, and who is performing?

Canadian singer The Weeknd is headlining the Super Bowl halftime show. The Weeknd has three number one albums in his career. He’ll be taking to the stage at the end of the second quarter. However, we won’t know any more accurate timings until then, seeing as the length of game time impacts this part of the Super Bowl schedule.

What channel is the game on, and how can I stream it?

The game will be broadcast on CBS and streamed free on CBSSports.com and the CBS Sports app, which is available on various smartphones and streaming platforms. Jim Nantz and Tony Romo will provide the commentary, as they did two years ago (last year’s game was on Fox). ESPN Deportes will provide Spanish coverage.

You can also follow along with New York Times reporters as we discuss the game, the ads and the halftime show. We highly recommend it!

Among the broadcasters worldwide are Seven Network (Australia), CTV (Canada), L’Équipe (France), DAZN (Germany), the BBC (U.K.) and Viasat Sport East (Uzbekistan).

The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs had an N.F.L. best 14-2 record and won the A.F.C. championship. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11-5) were seeded just fifth in the N.F.C. and had to win three straight road games to make it to the Super Bowl.

Here’s a brief look at how both teams got here. And here are some interesting statistics about the two teams.

VS.

Why does Tampa Bay have a home advantage?

The Super Bowl sites are chosen several years in advance. This is the first time that a team has played a Super Bowl in its home stadium, although the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams have played in their home regions.

Inevitably the focus is on the matchup of the two quarterbacks: the veteran Tom Brady, who joined the Buccaneers after six Super Bowl titles in New England, and Patrick Mahomes, who is going for his second championship in three seasons as the Chiefs’ starter.

Among the other top names lining up will be tight end Travis Kelce and receiver Tyreek Hill of the Chiefs and tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receiver Mike Evans of the Bucs.

Wait, how old is Tom Brady?

He’s 43, making him the oldest player ever to play in a Super Bowl. He once said he hoped to play until he was 45, but asked this past week if he might continue even after that, he replied: “Yeah, definitely. I would definitely consider that.”

This raises questions: Is his arm bionic? Is he the Boy Who Lived?

How is the Super Bowl dealing with the pandemic?

Players, coaches and staff members are being tested for the coronavirus twice daily. Should there be a positive test, the person must stay away from his or her team for a minimum of 10 days.

As for hosting the Super Bowl during a pandemic, “We’ll make the best of it,” Tampa’s mayor said.

Will there be fans there?

There will be 22,000 fans in the seats, and 2,700 more in luxury boxes. About 7,500 of those people will be health care workers, who will get their tickets free. It will, by a comfortable margin, be the lowest attended Super Bowl.

There will, however, be 30,000 other attendees in the stands. They will be made of cardboard.

How Super is this Bowl going to be?

Well, you never know, but oddsmakers are calling the Chiefs only a 3-point favorite, so the game could be close. The teams played in November in Tampa, and the Chiefs won, 27-24.

Why do they call it a “Bowl” anyway?

Hmmm, I didn’t see that question coming. The term dates back to the Rose Bowl Game, and before that the Yale Bowl stadium, built in 1914. The title remains on big games today, even when played in stadiums that are not really bowl-shaped.

Who is going to win the Super Bowl? Just tell me.

Our resident prognosticator, Benjamin Hoffman, has made his pick. He correctly predicted winners 50 percent of the time during the playoffs, so you could also flip a coin.

I’m feeling lucky. How can I bet on the Super Bowl?

If you live in one of the 20 states where betting on games is legal and underway, you’ve probably seen many ads for online sportsbooks. And some of them are offering can’t-miss prop bets.

What else should I watch for during the game?

Shaquil Barrett, Jason Pierre-Paul and Ndamukong Suh all found a home with the Buccaneers after being discarded elsewhere. Now they are part of a fearsome pass rush that has a clear mission: Get Patrick Mahomes.

If the game is close, a penalty could decide it, and the Buccaneers were charged with 11 fewer penalties for 300 fewer yards than their opponents in the regular season, the largest differential in the league.

For the first time, two women will be coaching on the field during a Super Bowl — and a woman will be officiating, too.

Who will perform at the Super Bowl halftime show?

The Weeknd, known for the ubiquitous hit of 2020 “Blinding Lights,” plus “Can’t Feel My Face,” “Starboy” and “The Hills.” In the past, there have often been surprise guest performers at the show, but we don’t know if that will happen this year.

We do know that the Weeknd will perform mainly from the stands instead of on the field.

What time is the halftime show?

It depends on exactly how long it takes to play the first half, but probably around 8 p.m. Eastern.

Who’s singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl?

The national anthem will be a duet between the R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan and the country singer Eric Church. “America the Beautiful” will be performed by the soul singer H.E.R.

Poet of the moment Amanda Gorman will recite a new work as part of the pregame show as well.

How much did Super Bowl ads cost this year?

About .5 million for 30 seconds, close to the same as last year. Several of the sponsors most closely associated with the game, like Coca-Cola and Hyundai, have decided not to advertise in this unusual year. Budweiser said it also would not participate and would make a donation to vaccination efforts instead.

What’s with the Roman numerals?

The N.F.L. says that Super Bowls are numbered because the game is played in the calendar year after the regular season, and “Super Bowl 2021” could be ambiguous. It isn’t exactly Christians versus lions, but the Roman numerals also help give the game a sense of colossal importance.

What’s all this about owls?

Every year about this time, internet searches for “Super Bowl” go way up. But so do searches for “Superb Owl,” as fast-typing fans put the space in the wrong place.

In case you actually arrived at this article looking instead for owl content, here’s a story about a snowy owl spotted in Central Park for the first time in a century. Now that’s superb.

All of those football feelings are equally valid. Read on to find what you seek.

Super Bowl LIV between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 2nd.

The Chiefs and the 49ers will meet at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. The stadium is quite the workhorse: It is the regular season home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins and the NCAA's Miami Hurricanes. The Orange Bowl is also held there every winter.

It was the home of the Florida Marlins baseball team until 2012 when a giant white neomodern spaceship called Marlins Park beamed up the entire franchise and resettled them several miles away in a Little Havana parking lot.

You can catch the game on FOX or FOX Deportes, or stream it through NFL.com, sling, fubo, the Fox Sports app or Fox Now. You can also follow live updates on CNN.com.

Who are the main people I need to know about?

Be prepared to feel very old and ugly! The 49ers are led by 28-year-old Handsome Person Jimmy Garoppolo, and the Chiefs are led by 24-year-old Handsome Person Patrick Mahomes. These two young quarterbacks have already accomplished a lot in their careers: Last season, Mahomes led the Chiefs to their first AFC Championship since 1993 and was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player.

Garoppolo has two Super Bowl titles from his time with the New England Patriots, but both of those were earned in the shadow of Mega-Handsome Person Tom Brady. This is the first opportunity Garoppolo has had to forge his own path to Super Bowl glory.

Of course, a REAL fan (and that's what you're trying to be, right?) would know the names of at least a few players that aren't, you know, the main guys on the field. The 49ers have cornerback Richard Sherman, who won the Super Bowl during his time with the Seattle Seahawks in 2013.

Ironically, the Seahawks lost the Super Bowl the following year to the New England Patriots. Who was on the Patriots roster at the time? Jimmy Garoppolo. The NFL world is weird and small.

The Chiefs have tight end Travis Kelce, a five-time Pro Bowler who's been with the team since 2013. Now you can say things like, "That Kelce, huh? What a football guy," and everyone will agree.

The two head coaches should make you feel less old, although Kansas City chiefs head coach Andy Reid's glorious mustache will invite other feelings of inadequacy.

Reid's one of the winningest head coaches in NFL history, which must be both a source of pride and deep frustration, since Reid has still never won a Super Bowl as head coach. Sure, he's come really close multiple times, but the closer you get to a goal, the more excruciating it is when you fall short.

The 49ers are coached by Kyle Shanahan, who sort of looks like how Jimmy Garoppolo would if he peered into a mirror that aged him. Speaking of excruciating shortfalls, Shanahan was the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons during their devastating overtime loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI. That probably doesn't haunt him at all.

What are some other good names to know?

Byron Pringle plays for the Chiefs. DeForest Buckner, George Kittle and Ahkello Witherspoon play for the 49ers. They all have really good names.

Why is everyone wearing red and yellow? I hate it.

Unfortunately, the football cosmos has aligned in such a way that, no matter what jerseys the two teams wear, the whole game will look like a battle between warring colonies of fire ants. It's the first time in history two primarily red teams have met in the Super Bowl, let alone two teams with red-and-gold/yellow schemes.

The 49ers have elected to wear their white "away" jerseys and gold pants, while the Chiefs will wear their retina-searing red jerseys and white pants. This should make gameplay a little easier to follow, if not a little easier to actually look at.

Isn't there some sort of long-held superstition about jersey colors?

Correct. The Super Bowl superstitious will note that the jersey choices favor the 49ers. Thirteen of the last 15 Super Bowl champions won it all in their white jerseys, and the 49ers in particular are 2-0 when wearing their white away uniforms. Originally, 49ers fans were hoping the team would elect to wear their all-white throwback uniforms, but, c'mon guys. That's way too much white. What is this, the War of the Roses?

Which team is actually favored to win?

According to major betting sites, this game is going to be a close one. Despite the spiritual disadvantage of the red jersey, the Kansas City Chiefs are juuuuust ever so favored to win. Of course, now that they've forecasted a tight game, one of these teams is going to score 42 unanswered points and 80% of the country will turn off the game before halftime.

Speaking of halftime, who is performing?

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will be performing this year's halftime show, so if you thought halftime would give you a break from feeling unattractive and physically inadequate, well, you're wrong. The duo is also planning to honor the late NBA legend Kobe Bryant during their performance.

Go ahead, indulge a little early:

One of the most hotly anticipated ads this year is a Michelob Ultra spot featuring John Cena, Jimmy Fallon, the Roots and...Usain Bolt! The premise is about how working out is hard and beer is good. Listen, we're watching the Super Bowl to have a good time, not be called out on a personal level.

While the millions of dollars spent trying to get us to buy snack foods, tires and avocados is usually the most unifying force in a Super Bowl, this is an election year. Both Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Michael Bloomberg will be running ads, so try to keep it civil around the queso, okay?
